My Plaster Ceiling Is Sagging

Manufactured on a continuous production line plasterboard is comprised of a specially formulated gypsum core encased between heavy duty paper liners.

My plaster ceiling is sagging.

To avoid cracking the plaster and creating an even bigger repair job don t pull the plaster tight to the lath in a single motion. Sagging ceilings all too often we see plasterboard ceilings that have noticeably come away from their fixings. Ceiling cracks and droops occur for a variety of reasons including improper installation moisture damage and a slipped foundation. Sagging in a ceiling may be caused by undersized drywall.

Small spidery cracks can become large cavernous holes if left untreated. Flaking and cracking plaster are relatively minor repair items but when the plaster starts to sag or belly out from a wall or ceiling it indicates deeper problems. Work carefully to avoid damaging the surrounding ceiling. To reattach the sagging plaster to the lath drive the washer with a power screwdriver or drill so that it penetrates the wood lath wall studs or ceiling joists.

To learn if your own sagging ceiling is a candidate for this sort of repair start by checking to see how far the plaster layer has sagged. Ceiling drywall that sags between joists or trusses is sometimes called pillowed drywall. Use a chisel or utility knife to gently remove loose or damaged plaster in the area. Plaster is heavy and it needs a solid well anchored base to support its weight.

Inspect the sagging plaster. Using plaster magic prevents having to skim the entire ceiling because it uses a very effective adhesive to reattach the plaster to the lathe meaning no permanent plaster washers. Left untreated ceiling cracks will enlarge or the weight of a sagging plaster ceiling can pull the surrounding ceiling down with it. If the plaster goes back into place with no more than one half inch of play and without any crunching sounds you can fix your ceiling rather than replacing it.

Plasterboard is normally fixed. If insulation is the culprit you may eventually see uniform sagging across the entire ceiling. I prefer using a product called big wally s plaster magic to reattach sagging plaster in my projects and i ll walk you through the steps below. Cracks and sags in your ceiling can be a result of a multitude of cosmetic or structural issues.

Or add furring strips and a second layer of 5 8 in. You either have to replace 1 2 in. However the ceiling will need to be replaced if the entire section is sagging. Five reasons your ceiling is sagging whether the cracks appeared overnight or it has gradually crept in a sagging or cracked ceiling is not something to be taken lightly.

Again this is a situation where an early repair is much cheaper than repairing a collapsed ceiling.
